The Ferry to Juneau

Every Friday and Sunday our trusty Fairweather Express II leaves the docks of Glacier Bay and travels about 3 hours to Juneau. They do this for many reasons among them to pick up cargo for the lodge, and to pick up guests who decide not to fly into Gustavus. Since it is free, for some employees, those who are not working those nights, it is a chance to get out. The boat only docks for less than 30 minutes, but it is enough time to get off the boat and make it to the convience store that is a short walk from the dock. Here people stock up on items that are unavaliable at the lodge. On the top of my list was Red Bull, since there is no Starbucks, and I cannot have my vannila latte, I have become addicted to Red Bull, and my supply was out.

This was my first trip and I was very exicited. On the top of my list of things to see while in Alaska, killer whales were on the top of my list. I had heard that the Juneau run was a really good chance to see killer whales, and I was not dissapointed. Captain Dan, who is the man in charge of the bi-weekly trip said that this trip was the best of the season so far. The water was so calm and it was a beautiful day, and the whales were ready for play time. It was a bummer that the captain had a schedule to keep, so we only had about ten minutes to watch them until we had to continue on.
