The people of Gustavus take the summer solstice seriously. They celebrate by having a huge bonfire a few hundred yards from the beach. It is a fun time. On then night of the longest day of the year, there was an overcast, so I was told that it was much darker than it has been in years past when the sky was clear. The week leading up to the summer solstice you could easily notice that it was staying lighter out much longer. We would get off work around 11pm and it would feel like it was early evening. The time in the video is 9:51pm. The picture of Ian and I on the beach was taking around 11pm. In the picture Ian looks like casper the ghost, and I'm not sure why, buy you can see how light it is. It definitly got dark but it was only for a couple of hours. Sunrise was early 3am. I'm glad that I brought my slumber mask, or I would be miserable.

I looked over your whole blog this evening. What a great time you seem to be having. I'm very happy for you. I enjoy your writing too. You guys look really happy. It is neat to be able to see where you are living and working.
Mona, Katie and me went down to Pleasanton the other day and saw your folks (Ian) and saw their new house.
You guys take care and I hope you will be creating lots more great memories while you are there in Alaska.
Much love, Tom
