On an earlier blog, we did the River Trail. There is another trail called the Lake Trail. The Lake Trail is much longer. Over all we hiked about 10 miles. It was a long day. After reaching the lake, we walked along it for a while until the trail took us away from the lake. The trail lead to an old abandoned road that we walked along for about 45 minutes. It was straight as a arrow and never ending. It was kind of eerie. You could tell that the road had not been in use for quite a while because it had been overtaken by grass and moss and on both sides of the road were alder trees, so it make a sort of tunnel (it is in the background of the picture that has both of us in it). I found myself, ever once in a while, looking behind me to make sure there was no one there. The road lead to a asphalt road which lead the the current road that runs between the Lodge and Gustavus. We walked along the road until a car came along and picked us up and took us back to the Lodge. I am so glad that we got a ride back to the lodge. If we would of had to walk it would have been another 3 or 4 miles. I did not have the energy for it. It's not uncommon to hitchhike back and forth, that's how a lot of the employees get around.
We saw a couple of fresh bear scat (poo) along the abandoned road but once again we saw no wildlife. We have been here for a little over a month and a half, and have not encounted a bear or a moose. There is a black bear that has been sighted numerous times walking around the lodge, and there is also a moose that has been sighted a couple of times.
The other day we had some employees staying in the campground near the lodge, and the were charged by a moose and had to run behind a tree to get out of the way. Not that I want something like that to happen to us but it would be nice to see something from a safe distance while on land.
